Early Intervention Programs

Many musculoskeletal work-related injuries develop as employees are exposed to certain risk factors – heavy exertion, frequent repetition, awkward positions, or uncomfortable postures. Often, these injuries are not the result of one dramatic event – they develop gradually over time.

Because of the gradual development, early warning signs are present weeks and months before a full-blown injury occurs that requires medical treatment.

With a proactive strategy implemented to address the early warning signs and underlying causes, many work-related injuries can be avoided.

EIP Strategic Advantage

Early warning signs can include:

  • Achiness
  • Weakness
  • Abnormal fatigue
  • Discomfort
  • Muscle soreness

What’s included in an EIP?

There are three OSHA-approved first aid interventions that can be used to treat musculoskeletal conditions:

  • Heat and cold treatments
  • Massage
  • Soft (non-rigid) supports (including kinesiotaping)

Additionally, the EIP provider can discuss work practices that might decrease the stress and strain that the body experiences on a day-to-day basis. For example, the EIP provider might teach proper lifting or optimal
body positioning for getting a task done.

EIP Outcomes and Financial Imapct

In 2018, ErgoScience implemented an Early Intervention Program with a major manufacturer in our local market. With the average lost-time injury costing $40,000 per injury in direct costs alone, ErgoScience has saved this employer over $2.7 million over a two-year period with its Early Intervention Program.

Over a 3-year time frame, 72 employees attended the program with the following results:

  • 69% of applicants improved pain and function after 3-5 visits
  • 25% were referred for more comprehensive physical therapy
  • 8% were referred to their primary physician
  • 2% were referred to the company’s corporate wellness program to address other more global health issues. (See graph below.)
  • None converted to an OSHA recordable
