“As part of the Virginia Department of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center’s physical therapy department has been using the PWPE since 2001 to evaluate individuals with disabilities as they are working to identify potential employment opportunities including vocational and life skills training.

We recently were approached to provide a custom-tailored assessment product for the Hershey candy manufacturing facility in our community as they embarked on a special effort to hire and mentor persons with disabilities to work in the production facility. After a site visit to assess the production lines and specific job duties/demands, we identified the relevant PWPE tasks and added job-specific testing. The ability to participate for a full day of sorting/packing and working as a part of a team in a production setting was then assessed through our Materials Handling vocational classroom. The PWPE report provided the vocational staff with guidelines and recommendations for any accommodations needed by the individual.

The total evaluation package provided Hershey Human Resources staff with individualized recommendations for accommodating each person’s disability safely within the constraints of their production facility. Guidance for instructional methods to meet cognitive or learning disability challenges along with any physical accommodations offered very valuable information to the Hershey staff who will serve as mentors to these new employees.”
